Melanoma is a widespread, often destructive, cancer of the skin. It was originally the most prominent in older adults. However, the demographic is slowly shifting to younger individuals due to tanning and other lifestyle choices. The increase in melanoma cases poses a great burden on young adults diagnosed with the disease as well as older individuals. To help combat this trend and cater to the general demographic, the Clinical Image Analysis laboratory is developing a mobile application capable of identifying cancerous lesions, asking for pertinent information, and applying an algorithm using this information to determine the need of an individual to go and get checked by their local dermatologist – saving individuals time and money.
